8 Pop Culture Moments that the Department Photoshoots Remind Us of

Currently, the buzzworthy topic of conversation on campus is the Malhar Department Photoshoots: a time-honored tradition that vividly captures the essence and aspirations of each department in exciting and inventive ways! Each group made a statement about the energy they bring to the fest this year, and thanks to FnD’s skills and camaraderie, the shoots were not only a memorable bonding experience for core teams, but also led to some spectacular photographs. There lies deep thought and commendable effort behind every photoshoot this season, but here are a few results that took us down the memory lane of some trend-setting Pop Culture moments:

  1. Creatives walking down “Abbey Road”

Creatives came through with a rendition of The Beatles’ album cover for ‘Abbey Road’ (1969) with a Mumbai-twist of their own. Shot along the city’s shoreline, the photograph features the team walking beside the ocean waves similar to how the 4 band members strutted across a zebra crossing on Abbey Road in an album cover that has since become a timeless image and an enduring symbol of The Beatles’ music and legacy. Inspired by how the cover is a representation of the band’s unity and solidarity during a challenging time, we believe that this department clearly came together and delivered a ‘creative’ 😉 take on the photoshoots!

  1. Literary Arts channeling its inner Barbie

LA took a topical turn with its photoshoot this year as all team members dressed up like their version of a Barbie character in the Malhar world. In cute ensembles at a quaint, picturesque location, the team looks Pretty in Pink and offers a more authentic version of Barbie’s Plastic Paradise. As the 2023 Film continues to make headlines every day, LA presented their own depiction of the famous Barbie meme, where all the members possess unique powers and traits. All except one member who is, well, Just Ken.

  1. Admin setting up its own ‘Office’ for Malhar

Admin went all out for its shoot, aptly choosing the sitcom “The Office” (2005) as their theme and executing it with close attention to details. From Pam Beesly and Jim Halpert to Kelly Kapoor and even the IT guy, all members picked a unique character to embody and incorporated famous scenes from the show in their attire. While the photo is on point, whether it be the background or the birthday sign, we’re sure Admin’s administrative functioning will be much more efficient than Michael Scott’s.

  1. WPA ready to judge and take over a Talent Show

Combined with Euphoria’s glitterati make-up, some showstopping outfits and a location that totally matches their vibe, WPA looks like they are ready to judge our dancing and singing talents without breaking a single sweat. Their photo exudes the finesse and self-assuredness that judges from ‘The Voice’ have, and all this promises a breathtaking show from this department.

  1. Marketing on its way to take Malhar up to Wall-Street

Thriving under utter chaos and accepting every challenge with a grin, Marketing sets the tone with their corporate-busy look. With computers running 24×7, loose ties and money flying everywhere, this photo is perfectly reminiscent of this scene from The Wolf of Wall Street (2013). Marketing seems like it’s ready to embrace the storm that is Malhar, and the results are sure to bring home the bacon.

  1. ETC bringing us all ‘Back to the Future’

There was never a more classic ’80s look than Marty McFly himself. And with good ol’ blue jeans, matching denim shirts and glasses to pair with, ETC reminds us of the iconic Back to the Future (1985) ensemble. The rustic background just adds to the picture’s charm, and if this shoot is to be trusted, ETC will definitely win our hearts with their events like this movie did with its timelessness.

  1. W.Inc goes down the ‘Rabbit Hole’

Our favourite fairytale was brought to life with W.Inc’s portrayal of Alice in Wonderland. Recreating the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party turned out to be an A+ move as members dressed as the White Queen, the Queen of Hearts, the White Rabbit, Alice and the Mad Hatter himself. This photo took us back to the days of storybooks and daydreams, and W.Inc guarantees to carry the same magic forward to its innovative and exciting workshops.

  1. And finally, the Quartet Can Do It!

An all-female quartet is a moment worth celebrating, and the boss women leading us all this year are proving that they can do it all, and more! The yellow background and feminine energy in the photo subtly remind us of the poster of Rosie the Riveter, which is generally recognized as a symbol of female empowerment and representation of women’s contribution to the workforce. Indeed, this photo allows us to take a moment and smile at how far we have come, yet remember that no matter how far we’re still left to go, the path paved by history is destined to be walked on by us to fruition.
