Met Gala Comes to Malhar: The Department Photoshoots as Met Themes

The first Monday of May sees the biggest names in fashion flock to the Met Museum’s Costume Institute, but the third Monday of June saw Malhar assert itself as a formidable fashion force to be reckoned with. There is no lack of Anna Wintour’s on this campus.

1. PR Transcends Us to Met 1977: Vanity fair, A Treasure Trove

The iconic photoshoot executed by the PR department reminds us of the late eighties  and nineties vintage era of electric guitars, glamor and, with a hint of modernism and “Unladylike” bold demeanor! The flamboyance of its setting outshines Met 1977.

2. IPA Reflects Met 1985: Costumes of Royal India

All that glitters is truly gold, IPA stays true to its word and evokes the representation of our Royal India amidst the strong influences of the West. Extravagant shimmers, desired hues of red with its intricacies, echoes ethnic and cultural beauties. ‘Noor‘ and ‘ada’ bridge the gap between the theme and photoshoot, weaving both the ends, seamlessly.

3. Logistics Portrays Met 2017: Art of In-Between aka Avant-Garde

The pop of orange is the quintessence fashion element that meets avant-garde, challenging the notion of structured formal dressing and redefining our notions of ordinary aesthetics into a more absurd, oxidant setting. The paciano locale forces us to ponder upon on the boundaries that tie fashion and thereby defying them. A symbol of internal chaos and consequent rebellion!

4. Security Personifies Met 1999: Rock Style

The all-black colour scheme thematically appeals to how our inhibitions ward off when our inner ambitions soar, the background of two SUV’S embodies a more classical, discordant rock royalty that strikes a pose at every glance. No wonder this department shoot collides with the work that they abidingly do: being tough amidst the mayhem and daunting yells.

5.  Literary Arts Evokes Met 2022: Anthology of Fashion

The black and white semi-formal theme of this photoshoot cohesively ties the transition of American fashion as its culture became less stringent from corsets to sweaters, waistcoats and the era of slip-on easy to wear “unTIEd” fashion. Met 2022 celebrates American couture and its evolution through expression.

6. Marketing Marches Us to Met 2013: Punk, Chaos to Couture

Surrounded by graffiti and a splash of colors that incite chaos evidently mannered through the punk theme celebrated by met 2013, fits the mold perfectly. The funk captures and encapsulates punk articulately, flaunting their networking skills. The variety of colours depicts the array of tasks at their bay!

7. World performing arts Arrives in met 2011: Savage Beauty

The Met theme replicates the idea of freedom of thought and expression and champions the authority of creative visualization. WPA with its haute couture, minimalism, bold expressions and nuanced charms steals the show by exploring their recklessness. As the theme suggests, their focus is on the clothing, and the garments look natural because they were photographed in plain settings.

World Performing Arts Woos us with their Eyes !

These photoshoots are reminiscences of a few monumental Met Gala themes. Ones that show us beauty is intrinsic, beyond the outer layers that eventually shed. There’s always more than what meets the eye, isn’t it? This Malhar let’s dive deeper into our inner chaos and turn it into an evergreen melody.
